WebbAuthor: John Ashbery 1 Sitting between the sea and the buildings He enjoyed painting the sea’s portrait. But just as children imagine a prayer Is merely silence, he expected his subject To rush up the sand, and, seizing a brush, Plaster its own portrait on the canvas. 2 So there was never any paint on his canvas WebbAshbery's whole thing is to basically deconstruct poetry so it can be interpreted in as many ways as possible depending on the experiences/memories/associations which the reader brings to the table. He doesn't want any of his poems to each mean one thing. I'd go so far as to say he tries to make each one 'mean' as many things as possible at once.
